This book is quite a mild version of events that will still leave young black children a bit confused. The white doll on the nightstand also suggests that possibly this book was not entirely influenced by black individuals. I think it is important for black children to know their history. The TRUTH, and not a dressed-up version of it. Otherwise they might as well not know anything about it at all !

My 5yo loved, loved learning about Ruby Bridges and her bravery. This book was great, but the picture of the "angry mob" had people of color as the majority, when in reality White people were protesting her presence in the school. I'm not sure why the illustrator and author decided to do that, but it can be confusing to young children. I mean racism, in general, is confusing to young kids, but that just adds to it.I'd also recommend the book "The Youngest Marcher."

It is inspiring. But the book ends abruptly. We were not expecting that, not for 6.99 . Also, I can't believe people are complaining about Ruby's family using faith to make it through this hard time. News flash black history is deeply rooted in faith, in case you didn't know.

I bought this book for my grandchildren, who are (thankfully) being raised in a diverse neighborhood, by parents who are determined they will learn tolerance and acceptance at home. My daughter had the book on their Christmas list. I don’t know if she’s read it to them yet, but I do know they are still too young to comprehend the magnitude of Ruby’s story. Had they been present that day, they would have seen Ruby as just another kid, what’s the problem? Even when they’re older, I think it will be hard for them to imagine a time and place when black Americans were denied ordinary civil rights, and a little black girl was escorted to public school by armed officers to protect her from waves of angry white people. I can hardly imagine it myself sometimes. (I was only 3 years younger than Ruby on that day.)One reviewer thought the book failed to address the prevailing venomous racist attitudes and behavior of the times. Maybe that was the author’s intent. The book does seem to distill Ruby’s story down to simple messages: it wasn’t fair, and it was against the law. And maybe that’s enough for younger children, but I believe that school children need to learn the whole truth, sooner rather than later.Other reviewers called this book out for too much religion. I didn’t care for it either, but you can leave it out or skim over it without changing the overall message. The author probably included it because his research showed it was truly important to Ruby’s family. And, as stated by another reviewer, it’s no secret that faith and churchgoing are important elements in black communities. Still, you can probably find another book about Ruby with less emphasis on Christian messages.Finally, the story left me wondering about the judge. I would like to know what reasoning prompted him to send 3 little girls together to one school, but send Ruby to another school by herself. Was it based on where they lived?

I thought it was a sad but beautiful story of her life and what she had to endure as a child it just show how racism is still happening today. I really enjoyed reading how things eventually turned out and that she now has her own family. And she can teach her children about love. I wish that I could meet her one day. I am sixty eight years old and I’m so fascinated with her life.

We bought this book for our 4-year old son. We've been educating him more about black history and have been using books to aid with this. This book was good at teaching him the story of Ruby Bridges on an entry level. However, we and he noticed that the mob of people who was protesting Ruby integrating the school looked black as opposed to white. He was perplexed by this because it contradicted what the story was saying as well as what we've been teaching him. Someone else had listed this as a downfall of the book and I must agree. The illustration is inaccurate.
